Ingredient 1 of 3

Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil in Mighty K9: The Carrier Oil

Quick answer

Olive oil is the first ingredient in Mighty K9 and nearly all of each 2 mL serving. It dissolves the ESS60 and adds 16.2 kcal of pure fat. No dog joint study of olive oil was found. Dogs with a pancreatitis history or on a low-fat diet should see a vet first (Merck Vet Manual, Pancreatitis (owner)).

The carrier

Why is olive oil in Mighty K9?

Olive oil is the vehicle. C60 does not dissolve in water, so it has to ride in a fat, and olive oil is the classic choice.

The 2012 rat study that started the C60 trend used olive oil at the same 0.8 mg/mL strength (Baati et al., 2012). Mighty K9 copies that recipe. The front of the bottle says organic extra virgin olive oil; the ingredient line says extra virgin olive oil.

So the oil's main job is carrying ESS60 into the food bowl. It is not sold as a joint ingredient on its own, and the evidence agrees: we found no dog joint study of olive oil.

Profile

How much olive oil is in each serving?

Almost all of the 2 mL. The label lists crude fat at a minimum of 100% and moisture under 0.1%, so a serving is essentially pure oil.

On the label

Is the olive oil in Mighty K9 extra virgin and organic?

The label says extra virgin, and the front adds organic. Extra virgin means the oil is pressed without heat or solvents, which keeps its natural compounds.

The label text does not name an organic certifier. If organic status matters to your household, ask the order desk at +1 (302) 200-3480 for the certificate before you buy.

Whatever its grade, the calories are the same: the label prints 8,100 kcal ME per kg. See every label line, explained.

Calories

How many calories does Mighty K9 add to your dog's diet?

16.2 kcal a day, from fat alone. On a small dog, that is a large slice of the treat allowance.

WSAVA advises keeping treats and extras under 10% of daily calories, and AAHA says the same (WSAVA, Feeding treats) (AAHA Nutrition Guidelines, 2021). One serving is about two-thirds of a 4 kg dog's allowance, but only a seventh of a 30 kg dog's.

  • 4 kg (9 lb) dog68% of the treat budget
Treat budget about 24 kcal a day · one serving 16.2 kcal
  • 10 kg (22 lb) dog34% of the treat budget
Treat budget about 47 kcal a day · one serving 16.2 kcal
  • 20 kg (44 lb) dog21% of the treat budget
Treat budget about 79 kcal a day · one serving 16.2 kcal
  • 30 kg (66 lb) dog15% of the treat budget
Treat budget about 108 kcal a day · one serving 16.2 kcal

WSAVA advises keeping treats and extras under 10% of daily calories and gives these approximate daily ceilings for healthy adult dogs (WSAVA, Feeding treats). The 16.2 kcal figure is printed on the Mighty K9 label. On a small dog, one serving uses most of the treat budget.

If you start Mighty K9, trim another treat by the same amount. Lean weight is the most important thing you control for joints (ACVS, Osteoarthritis in Dogs).

Fat and the pancreas

Can olive oil cause pancreatitis in dogs?

A small daily amount is unlikely to on its own, but fat is the concern. Large amounts of table scraps and fatty food are believed to be a common trigger for pancreatitis in dogs (Merck Vet Manual, Pancreatitis (owner)).

Dogs recovering from pancreatitis are usually moved to a low-fat diet and low-fat treats. A supplement that is 100% fat does not fit that plan without your vet's say-so.

Ask your vet first if your dog

has ever had pancreatitis, is on a low-fat or prescription diet, has high blood fats, or is on a weight-loss plan. Vomiting, belly pain or refusing food after starting any new oil needs a vet the same day.

Allergy research

Is olive oil linked to food reactions in dogs?

One study found a link, not proof. Researchers in Italy looked at 459 dogs seen for skin problems. Added oil was more common in dogs with adverse food reactions (Maina & Cox, 2025).

Key numbers from Maina and Cox, 2025, a preliminary study of 459 dermatology-referral dogs in Italy (Maina & Cox, 2025).
FindingFigure
Dogs given any added oil14.16%
Of those, given extra virgin olive oil70.77%
Oil use in dogs with food reactions29.31%
Oil use in dogs without food reactions10.10%
Protective effect of olive oilNone found

An association can have many causes. Owners of itchy dogs may simply add oil more often. Still, if your dog has skin or gut trouble, tell your vet about every oil in the bowl.

Daily amount

Can I give my dog olive oil every day?

Small daily amounts are common, but keep the total inside the treat budget. With Mighty K9, the 2 mL serving already is your dog's olive oil for the day.

  • Give 2 mL a day, per the label. Do not add a separate splash of kitchen olive oil.
  • Count the 16.2 kcal with treats, chews and table food.
  • Weigh your dog monthly. Any gain means trimming somewhere.
  • Most adult dog foods already contain 5% to 15% fat on a dry-matter basis (Merck Vet Manual, Nutritional Requirements).

Loose stools are the usual sign of too much oil. See how to measure and mix the serving.

FAQ

Olive oil in Mighty K9: common questions

Does olive oil help dogs with arthritis?

No dog study shows that olive oil helps arthritis. We found no joint trial of olive oil in dogs. The oil with good joint evidence is omega-3 fish oil: 82% of dogs on a fish-oil food bore more weight on sore legs, versus 38% of controls (Roush et al., 2010).

How many calories are in Mighty K9?

Each 2 mL serving has 16.2 kcal, all from fat, per the label. The label also prints 8,100 kcal ME per kg. For a 10 kg dog, that is about a third of the daily treat budget WSAVA suggests (WSAVA, Feeding treats).

Is olive oil bad for dogs with pancreatitis?

It can be risky. Fatty food is a suspected pancreatitis trigger, and dogs recovering are kept on low-fat diets (Merck Vet Manual, Pancreatitis (owner)). Mighty K9 is 100% fat, so ask your vet before giving it to a dog with any pancreatitis history.

Can olive oil give my dog diarrhea?

Yes, new oil can loosen stools, especially at first or with too much. Stick to the 2 mL serving and mix it into food. If diarrhea lasts more than a day or comes with vomiting, stop and call your vet.

Where does the olive oil in Mighty K9 come from?

The origin of the olive oil is not printed on the label. The Manufacture in USA badge refers to where the product is made. Call the order desk at +1 (302) 200-3480 if you want to ask about sourcing or organic certification.

Is extra virgin olive oil safe for dogs?

Small amounts are generally fine for healthy dogs, and it is the oil owners add most often (Maina & Cox, 2025). The cautions are calories, fat and possible food reactions. Keep the total inside 10% of daily calories and check with your vet if your dog has gut or skin issues.
