Olive Oil for Dogs: Is It Safe, How Much, and Does It Help Joints?

Quick answer

A small amount of olive oil is generally fine for a healthy dog, but it is pure fat. Mighty K9's 2 mL serving adds 16.2 kcal, a third of a 10 kg dog's daily treat budget. Dogs with pancreatitis or on low-fat diets need a vet's okay first. No dog joint study of olive oil exists.

The short answer

Is olive oil safe for dogs?

For most healthy dogs, a small amount of olive oil is safe. The risks come from the amount, because olive oil is pure fat and adds calories fast.

Olive oil is not toxic to dogs. It is also not a nutrient your dog is missing. A complete commercial dog food already supplies the fat a dog needs; most adult foods contain 5% to 15% fat on a dry-matter basis (Merck Vet Manual, Nutritional Requirements).

Olive oil is the base of Mighty K9: nearly all of each 2 mL serving. Read about the grade and role of the oil on the olive oil ingredient page.

What owners do

How many owners add olive oil to dog food?

Quite a few. In one Italian study of 459 dogs seen by skin specialists, 14.16% were given added oil, and extra virgin olive oil was the top choice: 70.77% of the dogs that got oil (Maina & Cox, 2025).

Owners add it for coat shine or picky eaters. That is a human habit, not a dog need.

Calories

How many calories does olive oil add for my dog's size?

One 2 mL serving of Mighty K9 adds 16.2 kcal, printed on the label as 8,100 kcal ME/kg. WSAVA says treats and extras should stay under 10% of daily calories (WSAVA, Feeding treats). AAHA gives the same 10% rule (AAHA Nutrition Guidelines, 2021).

  • 4 kg (9 lb) dog68% of the treat budget
Treat budget about 24 kcal a day · one serving 16.2 kcal
  • 10 kg (22 lb) dog34% of the treat budget
Treat budget about 47 kcal a day · one serving 16.2 kcal
  • 20 kg (44 lb) dog21% of the treat budget
Treat budget about 79 kcal a day · one serving 16.2 kcal
  • 30 kg (66 lb) dog15% of the treat budget
Treat budget about 108 kcal a day · one serving 16.2 kcal

WSAVA advises keeping treats and extras under 10% of daily calories and gives these approximate daily ceilings for healthy adult dogs (WSAVA, Feeding treats). The 16.2 kcal figure is printed on the Mighty K9 label. On a small dog, one serving uses most of the treat budget.

On a toy dog, one serving leaves little room for anything else. Cut a treat to make space, and weigh your dog monthly. Our guide to supplement calories shows how to count it.

Amount

How much olive oil can I give my dog?

No official dose of olive oil exists for dogs. The safest rule is the calorie one: keep all extras, olive oil included, under 10% of your dog's daily calories (WSAVA, Feeding treats).

For Mighty K9, the label gives one amount for every dog: 2 mL once daily, mixed into food. The brand lists size groups in its calculator but publishes no amount per weight. So do not adjust the serving up or down on your own. Ask your vet about small or toy dogs.

  • Measure with the dropper, not a kitchen spoon. Two full droppers make 2 mL.
  • Do not stack Mighty K9 on top of other added oils. Pick one.
  • If you already add olive oil to meals, stop that before you start Mighty K9.
  • Start on a normal day, so you can spot any stomach upset.

Fat and the gut

Can olive oil cause pancreatitis or an upset stomach in dogs?

Large amounts of fat can. The Merck Veterinary Manual lists table scraps and other fatty food as a common suspected trigger for pancreatitis, and dogs recovering from it go on low-fat diets (Merck Vet Manual, Pancreatitis (owner)).

Signs of a severe case include loss of appetite, vomiting, weakness, belly pain, dehydration and diarrhea (Merck Vet Manual, Pancreatitis (owner)). Two mL a day is a small amount of fat. Still, it is all fat.

Ask your vet first if

Your dog has had pancreatitis, is on a low-fat or weight-loss diet, or has a sensitive stomach. Stop the oil and call your vet if your dog vomits, has loose stools or stops eating after you start it.

More detail on stomach upset and what to watch for is on the side effects page.

Research

Is olive oil linked to food allergies in dogs?

One study found a link, but not proof. In the Italian study, added oil was more common in dogs with adverse food reactions: 29.31% of them got oil, versus 10.10% of other dogs (Maina & Cox, 2025).

That is an association, not cause and effect. Owners of itchy dogs may add oil hoping to help the skin. The study also found no protective effect from olive oil.

If your dog has a food allergy, tell your vet before adding any oil. Mighty K9's bacon flavor source is not listed, which matters on strict diets.

Joints

Is olive oil or fish oil better for dog joints?

Fish oil, by a wide margin. Omega-3s from fish oil have real dog trials behind them. Olive oil has none for joints.

Olive oil is mostly monounsaturated fat. It does not supply the EPA and DHA omega-3s found in fish oil. In a randomized, double-blind trial of 38 dogs with arthritis, 82% of dogs on a food with 3.5% fish oil omega-3s bore more weight on their sore legs after 90 days, versus 38% of controls (Roush et al., 2010).

Fish oil omega-3

Olive oil

  • No dog joint study found
  • Adds calories with no proven joint effect
  • Linked, not proven, to food reactions (Maina & Cox, 2025)

Ask your vet about an omega-3 joint diet or a fish oil dose sized to your dog.

Where it fits

Where does Mighty K9's 2 mL of olive oil fit?

In Mighty K9, the olive oil is a carrier. It holds the 1.6 mg of ESS60 and the bacon flavor, and it supplies all 16.2 kcal.

That means the oil itself is not the reason to buy it, and no controlled trial has tested the ESS60 in dogs either. What the bottle does well: a three-ingredient label with the calories printed, an easy mix-in format and a taste most dogs accept. If your dog is lean, healthy and already on a vet's joint plan, it is a small, countable extra. Compare it with what has dog trials behind it on the benefits page.

FAQ

Olive oil for dogs FAQ

Can I give my dog olive oil every day?

A healthy adult dog can usually have a small daily amount, as long as all extras stay under 10% of daily calories (WSAVA, Feeding treats). Mighty K9's 2 mL serving adds 16.2 kcal, so count it with your dog's other treats.

Does olive oil help dogs with arthritis?

No study in dogs shows that olive oil helps arthritis. The joint evidence belongs to fish oil omega-3s: 82% of dogs on a fish oil food bore more weight on sore legs versus 38% of controls (Roush et al., 2010). Lean weight and vet care matter more than any oil.

How much olive oil is too much for a dog?

Too much is any amount that pushes extras past 10% of daily calories, or that brings on loose stools or vomiting. For a 4 kg dog, one 2 mL Mighty K9 serving already uses about two-thirds of the roughly 24 kcal treat budget (WSAVA, Feeding treats).

Does extra virgin beat regular olive oil for dogs?

No dog study compares them. Extra virgin is less processed, which matters for flavor and freshness, but both are pure fat with the same calories. Mighty K9 uses organic extra virgin olive oil. Whatever you use, keep it sealed and out of light.

Can olive oil give my dog diarrhea?

Yes, extra fat can cause loose stools or vomiting, especially when it is new or the amount is large. Use the measured 2 mL, and stop if the upset continues.

What does olive oil do for a dog's coat?

Owners often add it for coat shine, but no dog study confirms that olive oil improves skin or coat. One study found added oil was more common in dogs with food reactions, an association only (Maina & Cox, 2025). Itchy or flaky skin deserves a vet visit first.
