The rules
Why does a dog supplement use a pet food style label?
Dog supplements in the U.S. are labeled under animal feed rules, not the human supplement law. The FDA says DSHEA, the law behind human "Supplement Facts" panels, does not apply to animal products (AVMA, Assessing pet supplements).
So the bottle follows the pet food model. AAFCO says a guaranteed analysis must state minimum crude protein and fat and maximum crude fiber and moisture (AAFCO, Reading Labels). That is why an oil shows "Crude Protein 0%".
- The FDA does not approve pet foods before they are sold (FDA, Pet Food).
- A product sold to treat or prevent disease counts as an animal drug under the law (FDA, Unapproved Animal Drugs). That is why the label makes no disease claims.
The ESS60 footnote comes from the same system. It means dogs do not need ESS60 the way they need protein or vitamins.
Front of the bottle
What does "Contains 100% ESS60" mean on Mighty K9?
It means the C60 in the oil is the ESS60 brand. It does not mean the bottle is 100% ESS60. Each 2 mL serving holds 1.6 mg of ESS60, which works out to 0.8 mg per mL of oil.
ESS60 is a registered trademark of SES Research Inc. for C60, a ball-shaped molecule made of 60 carbon atoms (USPTO via Justia, ESS60).
"Contains 100% ESS60" is a sourcing claim about which C60 was used. The real amount is the Guaranteed Analysis line: 1.6 mg per serving. The rest of the 2 mL is olive oil plus a little flavor.
The ESS60 page covers the C60 studies.

How many calories are in Mighty K9?
Each 2 mL serving has 16.2 kcal, all from fat. The label gives the same figure two ways: 8,100 kcal ME per kg and 16.2 kcal ME per 2 mL serving.
8,100 kcal per kg is 8.1 kcal per gram. The label counts 2 mL as about 2 grams, and 8.1 times 2 is 16.2. A full bottle adds 486 kcal over a month.
| Dog size | Treat budget per day | One serving uses | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 kg (9 lb) | About 24 kcal | About two-thirds | Cut most other treats that day |
| 10 kg (22 lb) | About 47 kcal | About a third | Drop one or two small treats |
| 20 kg (44 lb) | About 79 kcal | About a fifth | Trim chews a little |
| 30 kg (66 lb) | About 108 kcal | About a seventh | Keep an eye on the scale |
AAHA uses the same 10% rule (AAHA Nutrition Guidelines, 2021). Count the oil as a treat, and weigh your dog once a month. The guide to supplement calories shows how to fit it in.
Missing details
What does the Mighty K9 label leave out?
Six details are missing. None is unusual for a small dog supplement, but each is worth a question before you buy.
Bacon flavor source
AAFCO lets a product say "bacon flavor" when an ingredient gives that taste (AAFCO, Reading Labels). The label does not say what that ingredient is. Dogs with food allergies: ask first.
Olive oil origin
The front says organic extra virgin olive oil. The country it comes from is not printed, and the "Manufacture in USA" badge does not cover it.
Best-by date and lot
The Guaranteed Analysis panel does not show where the lot number or best-by date sits. Look on the bottle, the cap and the box, and write both down.
NASC Quality Seal
Mighty K9 shows no NASC seal. That seal means an audited quality and labeling program, not proof a product works (NASC, Quality Seal).
GMP certifier
The red GMP roundel names no certifier, audit or facility. Treat it as a brand badge until a report is published.
Amount by dog size
The label gives 2 mL a day for every dog. The brand calculator lists size groups but no amounts. Ask your vet about small or toy dogs.
Keep the bottle closed and dark: a 2021 mouse study found C60 in olive oil breaks down in light (Grohn et al., 2021). Badges are covered on testing and quality, and seller codes on batch verify.
Our read
Is the Mighty K9 label clear and honest?
Mostly, yes. It prints the ESS60 amount and the calories, which many supplements skip. The gaps are the flavor source, oil origin and an outside seal.
Points in its favor
- Three ingredients, easy to scan
- ESS60 amount printed: 1.6 mg per 2 mL
- Calories printed per serving and per kg
- Clear serving size and servings per bottle
Points to ask about
- Bacon flavor source not listed
- Olive oil country of origin not listed
- No NASC seal, no named GMP auditor
- No amounts for small or giant dogs
A clear label is not evidence that the product helps joints. For that question, see each benefit claim checked. To start, follow how to use it.
FAQ
Mighty K9 label questions
What is the guaranteed analysis on Mighty K9?
It is the nutrient panel on the bottle. Per 2 mL serving it lists crude protein 0%, crude fat 100%, crude fiber 0%, moisture under 0.1% and ESS60 1.6 mg. It also prints 16.2 kcal per serving. Pet food rules require the protein, fat, fiber and moisture lines (AAFCO, Reading Labels).
Is Mighty K9 really 100% ESS60?
No. "Contains 100% ESS60" means the C60 used is the ESS60 brand. The bottle is mostly olive oil. Each 2 mL serving holds 1.6 mg of ESS60, or 0.8 mg per mL. ESS60 is a trademark of SES Research Inc. for C60 (USPTO via Justia, ESS60).
How many calories are in a serving of Mighty K9?
Each 2 mL serving has 16.2 kcal, all from fat. The label also states 8,100 kcal ME per kg. For a 10 kg dog, one serving is about a third of the daily treat budget WSAVA suggests (WSAVA, Feeding treats). Count it with treats and chews.
What are the ingredients in Mighty K9 for dogs?
There are three: extra virgin olive oil, ESS60 and bacon flavor, in that order. The front calls the oil organic extra virgin. Only ESS60 has a printed amount. The label does not say what the bacon flavor is made from, so dogs with food allergies should ask first.
Does Mighty K9 have an NASC seal?
No. The bottle shows a GMP roundel, a Manufacture in USA roundel and a 30-day guarantee seal, but no NASC Quality Seal. The NASC seal means an audited quality program and label checks (NASC, Quality Seal). It does not prove a product works.
