Do Dog Supplements Have Calories? Why It Matters for Joints

Quick answer

Yes. Oil-based supplements carry real calories. One 2 mL serving of Mighty K9 adds 16.2 kcal, all of it fat. WSAVA and AAHA advise keeping treats and extras under 10% of daily calories, so that serving uses about a third of a 10 kg dog's treat budget. For joints, a lean body matters more than any supplement.

Play burns calories, but extras add them back. One Mighty K9 serving adds 16.2 kcal to your dog's day.

The short version

Do dog supplements have calories?

Many do, and oil-based ones are pure fat.

Mighty K9 is an oil: crude fat (min) 100% on the label. The calorie line reads 8,100 kcal ME/kg, or 16.2 kcal ME per 2 mL serving.

What to write down

Add 16.2 kcal to your dog's daily total. Credit to the label: it prints the number, so you can do the math.

Treat budget

What is the 10% treat rule for dogs?

Treats and extras should stay under 10% of your dog's daily calories. WSAVA says so (WSAVA, Feeding treats), and so does AAHA (AAHA Nutrition Guidelines, 2021). Supplements, chews and table bites all share that 10%.

The bars show how much of each WSAVA budget one serving uses.

  • 4 kg (9 lb) dog68% of the treat budget
Treat budget about 24 kcal a day · one serving 16.2 kcal
  • 10 kg (22 lb) dog34% of the treat budget
Treat budget about 47 kcal a day · one serving 16.2 kcal
  • 20 kg (44 lb) dog21% of the treat budget
Treat budget about 79 kcal a day · one serving 16.2 kcal
  • 30 kg (66 lb) dog15% of the treat budget
Treat budget about 108 kcal a day · one serving 16.2 kcal

WSAVA advises keeping treats and extras under 10% of daily calories and gives these approximate daily ceilings for healthy adult dogs (WSAVA, Feeding treats). The 16.2 kcal figure is printed on the Mighty K9 label. On a small dog, one serving uses most of the treat budget.

Do the math

How many calories does my dog need a day?

The starting point is the resting energy requirement (RER). The Merck Veterinary Manual gives the formula: RER = 70 x (body weight in kg) raised to the power 0.75 (Merck Vet Manual, Nutritional Requirements). A neutered adult needs about 1.6 x RER; dogs that gain easily, closer to 1.4 x RER.

Here is the math, rounded. A phone calculator handles the 0.75 power with its x to the y key.

RER and estimated maintenance calories, using the Merck formula; one Mighty K9 serving as a share of maintenance
Dog weightkg to the 0.75RER (x 70)Maintenance (1.6 x RER)16.2 kcal as share
5 kg (11 lb)3.34about 234 kcalabout 374 kcalabout 4%
10 kg (22 lb)5.62about 394 kcalabout 630 kcalabout 2.6%
20 kg (44 lb)9.46about 662 kcalabout 1,059 kcalabout 1.5%
30 kg (66 lb)12.82about 897 kcalabout 1,436 kcalabout 1.1%

Worked example, 10 kg: 10 to the 0.75 is 5.62. Times 70 is 394 kcal at rest; times 1.6 is about 630 kcal.

Single dogs can need 30% more or less than the formula says. WSAVA's treat ceilings run lower than 10% of this estimate, so use the WSAVA number as your limit.

Look and feel

How do I know if my dog is overweight?

Use the body condition score, a 9-point scale vets use. AAHA recommends it, and each point above 5 out of 9 means roughly 10% extra weight (AAHA Nutrition Guidelines, 2021). The AAHA senior guidelines put ideal at 4.5 to 5 out of 9 (AAHA Senior Care Guidelines, 2023).

  • Ribs: you can feel them easily under a thin layer, without pressing hard.
  • Waist: from above, you see a clear tuck behind the ribs.
  • Belly: from the side, the belly rises toward the back legs.
  • Base of the tail: no soft pad of fat.

Ask your vet to score your dog and write the number down. A dog at 7 out of 9 is roughly 20% heavier than ideal, with less room for extras.

The evidence

Does keeping a dog lean protect its joints?

Yes. In a lifelong study of 48 paired Labrador littermates, one dog in each pair ate 25% less (Kealy et al., 2002).

The lean-fed dogs showed hip arthritis on X-ray at a median age of 12 years. Their littermates showed it at 6 (Smith et al., 2006). By age 14, 83% of the normally fed dogs had hip arthritis, versus 50% of the lean dogs. The lean dogs also lived a median 13 years, versus 11.2 (Purina Lifespan Study, 2002).

The American College of Veterinary Surgeons calls a slender body weight by far the most critical part of arthritis care (ACVS, Osteoarthritis in Dogs). Compare the options in our supplements versus vet treatment post.

Can weight loss reduce limping in dogs with arthritis?

In one study it did, and the amount needed was small. Researchers followed 14 obese dogs with arthritis for 16 weeks. Losing about 6% of body weight brought a clear drop in lameness on gait testing (Marshall et al., 2010).

For a 30 kg dog, 6% is under 2 kg. Ask your vet to set a target weight and a daily calorie number.

On a weight-loss plan, ask before adding any oil. Dogs with a history of pancreatitis or on a low-fat diet need a vet's okay first, because fatty extras are a suspected trigger (Merck Vet Manual, Pancreatitis (owner)). See our side effects page.

Practical swaps

How do I make room for a 16.2 kcal supplement?

Take the calories out of treats, not the balanced main meal. The table shows what is left of the WSAVA treat budget after one serving.

WSAVA daily treat ceiling minus one Mighty K9 serving (16.2 kcal)
Dog weightTreat budgetAfter one servingShare used
4 kg (9 lb)about 24 kcalabout 8 kcalabout two-thirds
10 kg (22 lb)about 47 kcalabout 31 kcalabout a third
20 kg (44 lb)about 79 kcalabout 63 kcalabout a fifth
30 kg (66 lb)about 108 kcalabout 92 kcalabout a seventh
  1. Check the treat bag

Find the kcal per treat on the package. Count how many your dog gets in a normal day.

  2. Break treats in half

Dogs care about the reward, not its size. Half a biscuit is half the calories.

  3. Weigh your dog regularly

Use the same scale. If the number creeps up, trim food by a small amount and ask your vet.

Our how to use guide shows how to measure 2 mL.

Big picture

Is a calorie-dense supplement worth it for joints?

That depends on what you expect. The sales page sells Mighty K9 for joint comfort. No controlled trial of C60 or ESS60 has been done in dogs (Hui et al., 2023). AAHA puts vet-prescribed NSAIDs and omega-3-enriched diets in its top tier, and most other supplements in tier 3 (AAHA Pain Guidelines, 2022).

In its favor

  • Calories printed clearly on the label
  • Small serving: 2 mL once a day
  • Three ingredients, easy to mix into food

Weigh this

  • All 16.2 kcal come from fat
  • Uses a big share of a small dog's treat budget
  • No dog joint trial behind the main ingredient

If you try it, keep your dog lean too. Read the full picture in our senior dog joint guide.

FAQ

Dog supplement calories: common questions

How many calories are in Mighty K9?

One 2 mL serving of Mighty K9 has 16.2 kcal, per the label's calorie statement of 8,100 kcal ME per kilogram. Every calorie comes from fat, since the guaranteed analysis lists crude fat at 100%. A 30-day bottle adds 486 kcal in total.

Should I count supplements in my dog's treat calories?

Yes, count supplements with treats. WSAVA and AAHA both advise keeping all extras under 10% of daily calories, including chews, oils and table bites. Log the supplement's calories first, then fit the other treats around them.

How do I calculate my dog's daily calories?

Use the RER formula: 70 times your dog's weight in kilograms raised to the 0.75 power. A neutered adult needs about 1.6 times that number. For a 10 kg dog, RER is about 394 kcal and maintenance is about 630 kcal. Single dogs can vary by 30%, so confirm with your vet.

Does weight loss help a dog with arthritis?

It can help a lot. In 14 obese dogs with arthritis, losing about 6% of body weight over 16 weeks clearly reduced lameness. Lifelong lean feeding also delayed hip arthritis in Labradors by a median of six years. Ask your vet for a target weight.

Can I give Mighty K9 to a dog on a diet?

Ask your vet first if your dog is on a weight-loss or low-fat diet. One serving adds 16.2 kcal of fat, which a strict plan has to count. Dogs with a history of pancreatitis also need a vet's okay, because fatty extras are a suspected trigger.

What body condition score is ideal for a dog?

AAHA puts ideal body condition at 4.5 to 5 on the 9-point scale. Each point above 5 means roughly 10% extra weight. You should feel the ribs easily and see a waist from above. Ask your vet to score your dog.
