C60 in Olive Oil: What the Research Really Shows (and What It Means for Dogs)

Quick answer

The C60 story rests on one small 2012 rat study: about six rats per group, with an estimated median lifespan of 42 months on C60 in olive oil. A larger 2021 mouse study found no lifespan gain and found C60 oil breaks down in light. No controlled trial of C60 has been done in dogs.

The starting point

Why does C60 in olive oil matter for Mighty K9?

C60 matters because it is the headline ingredient in Mighty K9. Each 2 mL serving carries 1.6 mg of ESS60, a branded C60, dissolved in organic extra virgin olive oil.

C60 is a hollow ball of 60 carbon atoms. ESS60 is a registered trademark of SES Research Inc. for its C60 ingredient (USPTO via Justia, ESS60), not a different molecule.

Almost every C60 product points back to the same few studies. You can see how ESS60 fits the full formula on the ESS60 ingredient page.

2012

What did the 2012 rat study on C60 in olive oil find?

The 2012 study reported that rats given C60 in olive oil lived much longer. The estimated median lifespan was 42 months, versus 22 months for rats given water and 26 months for rats given olive oil alone (Baati et al., 2012).

2021

Did the 2021 mouse study confirm the C60 lifespan result?

No. A larger, independent 2021 study gave C60 in olive oil to aged mice and found no lifespan benefit: a median of 145 weeks versus 144 weeks (Grohn et al., 2021).

  • Light breaks C60 oil down. Exposed to light, the C60 degraded with a half-life of about two days. The light-exposed oil made mice ill, and some died.
  • Store-bought C60 oils varied. Commercial samples differed in concentration and purity, so the label amount was not always what was in the bottle.
What to do with your bottle

Keep it closed, cool and out of light, as the label says: "Store in a cool and dark place." If the oil looks or smells different, stop and call the seller.

Safety

Is there a safety study for ESS60 in olive oil?

Yes, one short one. A 2024 study gave 20 rats C60 in extra virgin olive oil for 14 days at 3.8 mg/kg a day and found no adverse effects (Burres et al., 2024).

  • Funding and ownership. SES Research paid for the study. Two authors co-own SES Research, which the paper says profits from selling ESS60.
  • Length. Fourteen days is short. The authors themselves call for genotoxicity and long-term studies.

There is no long-term safety data in dogs. See Mighty K9 side effects for what to look for.

The only dog data

Has C60 been studied in dogs?

Only once, and only briefly. Six beagles ate C60 dissolved in grape seed oil for 9 days, and a blood marker of inflammation called C-reactive protein (CRP) fell compared with each dog's own starting level (Hui et al., 2023).

  • No control group of dogs given plain oil.
  • Not ESS60, and not olive oil.
  • No joint exam, no gait test and no owner score for stiffness.
  • Nine days, not months.

The authors also have a related patent application. A drop in one blood marker in six dogs is not evidence that C60 helps a dog get up from bed or climb stairs.

What about the inhalation study?

The National Toxicology Program ran 13-week studies where rats and mice breathed in C60 dust (National Toxicology Program, 2020). Some exposures caused lung inflammation, pigment deposits in the lungs and lymph nodes, and lower sperm motility. These were breathing studies, so they say little about C60 eaten in oil.

Dose math

How much C60 does a dog get from Mighty K9 per kg?

A dog gets far less C60 per kg than the 2012 rats did. One 2 mL serving holds 1.6 mg of ESS60, which works out to 0.32 mg/kg for a 5 kg dog and 0.04 mg/kg for a 40 kg dog.

The bars below show it to scale against the rat dose of 1.7 mg/kg. A 10 kg dog gets 0.16 mg/kg, about 9% of the rat dose. A 20 kg dog gets 0.08 mg/kg, about 5%. A 30 kg dog gets about 0.05 mg/kg, roughly 3%.

One 2 mL serving holds 1.6 mg of ESS60. We divided it by body weight and drew it to scale against the 1.7 mg/kg used in the 2012 rat lifespan study (Baati et al., 2012), the study most C60 marketing points to. That result was not repeated in mice (Grohn et al., 2021). Our arithmetic, not a dose recommendation.

A lower dose may mean less risk, but the rat result came from a far higher dose. The label gives one serving for every dog. The brand publishes no amounts by weight, so ask your vet about small or toy dogs. More on serving size is on the how to use page.

The bar to clear

What would count as good evidence for C60 in dogs?

A real answer would need a controlled trial in dogs with joint problems, using the same product and dose sold in the bottle. The FTC says animal or lab studies alone are not enough to back a health claim, and the research should match the product's dose and formula (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance).

  1. Dogs, not rats

Pet dogs with diagnosed arthritis, enough of them to see a real difference.

  2. A placebo group

Some dogs get plain olive oil with bacon flavor, and nobody knows which is which.

  3. Joint outcomes

Gait or force-plate testing plus owner pain scores, the way the fish oil trials were run.

  4. Months, with safety checks

At least 12 weeks, with bloodwork before and after, and independent funding.

Bottom line

So what does C60 research mean for your dog?

It means C60 for dogs is untested, not disproven. The famous rat result was small and not repeated, the only dog data is six beagles on a different oil, and nobody has measured joints.

In fairness, the label prints the exact ESS60 amount, the calories and all three ingredients.

If you try it, keep the basics in place: lean weight, regular walks and a vet check for any stiffness. Compare it with options that have dog trials behind them on our benefits page, and check current prices first.

FAQ

C60 research FAQ

Does C60 really extend lifespan?

There is no solid evidence that it does. One 2012 rat study with about six rats per group reported a longer estimated lifespan (Baati et al., 2012), but a larger 2021 mouse study found no gain at all, 145 versus 144 weeks (Grohn et al., 2021). No lifespan study has been done in dogs.

Is C60 in olive oil safe for dogs?

Long-term safety in dogs is unknown. The only regulatory-style study ran 14 days in rats, found no adverse effects, and was funded by SES Research, which two authors co-own (Burres et al., 2024).

Why does C60 oil need to be kept in the dark?

C60 in olive oil breaks down when exposed to light, with a half-life of about two days in the 2021 mouse study (Grohn et al., 2021). Store Mighty K9 closed, in a cool, dark cupboard.

How much C60 is in Mighty K9?

Each 2 mL serving holds 1.6 mg of ESS60, which is 0.8 mg per mL. For a 10 kg dog it works out to about 0.16 mg/kg, roughly 9% of the rat dose of 1.7 mg/kg.

Has C60 been tested on dogs with arthritis?

No. The only dog study fed six beagles C60 in grape seed oil for 9 days and measured one blood marker, CRP (Hui et al., 2023). It had no control group and did not test joints, walking or stiffness.

Is the NTP study proof that C60 is toxic?

No. The National Toxicology Program studies had rats and mice breathe in C60 dust for 13 weeks and saw lung changes at some exposures (National Toxicology Program, 2020). Breathing a powder is very different from eating it in oil, so these results do not show oral risk or oral safety.
